eat chocolate

January 18th, 2006

Not only is it good for you and (of course) delicious, but chocolate is also great for the environment! Need any more reasons?

One of my favorite LA landmarks is GONE!

January 17th, 2006

The Ambassador Hotel has been leveled. It’s the hotel where Bobby Kennedy was assassinated and several of the early Oscar ceremonies were held there. It was a great, crumbling icon and provided an awesome contrast to the mid-wilshire that has evolved into K-town (cool, by me, I love LA and all it’s people, especially if they make delicious food, which, supposedly LA has the best the best Korean food in the world! delicious.). Anyway, I guess it’s good that it’s gone (it was basically condemned) and we can move on, but it’s sad nonetheless. Next time I make it over to The Prince for some soju I’ll shed a tear for the Ambassador and times gone by — and then I’ll go have some delicious bibimbap! I’m very excited to watch and see where LA will evolve to next!

Lychee Surplus in Australia!

January 12th, 2006

Australian lychee growers have a huge surplus. Here’s an idea, make more lychee gels for me! Or, maybe I should vacation to Australia . . .

Anyway, bad news for the farmers, good news for lychee consumers. I wonder if any of those lychees will make it to the US.

subvert society and other favorite gossip blogs

January 4th, 2006

One of my favorite blog genres is “gossip blogs.” They’re tons of fun. They’re like all the mags you see waiting in line at the grocery store checkout line, but you don’t have to be annoyed with the people in line next to you and that guy yelling “this is not a library!” and the news is always fresh and the pics are usually nice and high res. Here are my favorites:

Funny Flickr.mov and Creative Commons

January 3rd, 2006

Check out this very funny video by jonathan coulton (thanks to fling for the link) – Flickr.mov (video/quicktime Object).

This is a great example of why Creative Commons is so awesome. Someone can put this together using other people’s flickr photos underneath a free and flexible legal framework that protects all our copyrights but still allows for sharing! Hooray internet!

Quotes

January 2nd, 2006

Here are two interesting quotes that I’ve come across lately . . .

Argue with idiots, and you become an idiot – Paul Graham, Hackers and Painters

You can’t plant an acorn in the morning and expect an oak in the afternoon

The first certainly resonates with some of the situations I find myself in . . . (and if you’re reading this, I probably don’t mean you, the second quote applies more 🙂 ).

The second is in reference to old friends and I don’t know where to attribute it to, but it’s nice to reflect on the importance of old friends and realize the effort it does take to build these relationships.

First Cup of the New Year!

First Cup of the New Year!
Originally uploaded by benchristen.

Happy New Year! I’m having my first cup of coffee for 2006. And, what better than my new french press (thanks, Ellen!) and one of my new Guinness mugs (thanks, mom!). I don’t have any particular resolutions this year — in that, we should be constantly reviewing our personal goals and keeping on track. I think my only resolution this year is to be better at my weekly gtd reviews — taking time each week to review what projects I’m working on (both at home and at work) and also take time to review my 1 year goals and other, more long-term goals. The new year is a great reminder to do this, but I think doing it every week will help bring a better focus to my life. (and of course, all the standard things are on my goal lists, i.e. go to the gym, do good things with my life, get out of debt, etc.) So, with a most delicious cup of coffee, I toast you all – Here’s to the new year! May it be strong, bold and go down smooth!

Nebraska is Beautiful

December 26th, 2005

– and boring. But, it’s great to be home spending time with family and friends. When I get near a high speed connection I will upload photos to flickr proving the beauty of Nebraska. Most people have the idea that Nebraska is very, very flat — which, it is. But, not so flat. People usually only see the section of the state near I-80 (the interstate – it only makes sense to have the biggest highway in the state on the flattest part of the state). On another note, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the speed of my site (dreamhost ru|3z) (and the wordpress admin pages) from dial-up. If I was a good employee I would also do some user testing from home — if I do that, Nebraska really is boring. Happy Holidays and w00t to all!
